Michelangelo's David, a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance created between 1501-1504, has a fascinating history. In the early 15th century, the governors of the Cathedral of Florence made the decision to commission twelve large figures depicting Old Testament characters to be placed along the edge of Santa Maria del Fiore's roof. When it came time to create the figure of David, a massive block of Carrara marble was purchased, but after several artists failed to complete the task, the block lay untouched for 25 years. Eventually, a young Michelangelo, who was only twenty-six at the time, convinced the officials that he could transform the block into something extraordinary.
This reproduction of Michelangelo's David is part of the Parastone Museum Collection (PN MIC04). Made from resin, it is white with subtle grey veins to mimic the appearance of real marble. The sculpture comes with a description card and measures 10.5 inches in height, 3.75 inches in width, and 2.5 inches in depth, weighing 1.4 lbs.
